Everyone loves electronics, for the pleasures it brings, whether in sound or image! So I've decided to share with you the knowledge I've acquired over the years.

In March 2025, which is Audio Month, I'll be publishing two articles a week on this blog, on Sundays and Thursdays.

Since the arrival of the big American chains, whose primary mission was to offer "pay and play", the general public's knowledge of musicality and its faithful reproduction has been lost. Most people under the age of 30 are unaware of the benefits of having the right sound and video reproduction equipment for a much more enjoyable experience!

Preamble

We'll be talking about the principles of operation and the benchmarks for measuring sound rendering. Together we'll explore the new digital media that offer so many benefits and pleasures, but also the return of the turntable. Why choose this speaker or amplifier? What are network players for? Are subwoofers essential for home theater? Can they be used exclusively for music? These are just some of the questions I'll try to answer.

 For those who are passionate about technical details, and in order to popularize and make technology more accessible, there will be columns that demystify it all!

 This field has so much to offer. We'll be exploring new trends, from decorative TVs to special-purpose sets, such as 3-season outdoor viewing, and motorized screen models that adapt to your cell phone for vertical viewing like you've never seen before...

 When it comes to household sound, we'll find out why many people use wireless speakers or "in-wall" speakers to broadcast music throughout every room. And what can we say about the absolute trend for sound-enhanced patios and terraces, right down to the extreme bass in the floor! Install an outdoor TV screen, and you'll discover a new dimension!

We'll visit our manufacturers, taking a look back at their founders and their ingenious career paths.

1) WE NEED A SOUND SOURCE!

To listen to music, you need a distribution chain for it

We start with a source, either a signal acquired by streaming on the web, by playing downloaded digital files or by an analog source such as a record player or radio receiver, and of course, digital media such as CD and DVD.

To do this, we will talk about the following components:

2) THE AMPLIFICATION OF OUR AUDIO SOURCE.

It's all well and good to collect the sounds, but you'll have to get them to a volume level that can be heard.

This is where the amplifier comes into play: depending on its design, it will render the sound taken from our source more or less faithfully. For more complete use, and to satisfy both the home theater enthusiast and the gamer, versions of amplifiers with multi-channel interpretation circuits will be added to the mix.

3) SOUND REPRODUCTION.

To hear the sound, you need speakers. Here again, you have to be careful, because not all of them have the same pedigree!

There are full-range speakers (to be avoided) as well as two-way, three-way and three-and-a-half-way, so you'll need to be careful. In general, the more channels you have, the more precise the result will be. However, this is far from being the only criterion...

To perfect reproduction in all its splendor, many people will turn to an accessory loudspeaker specializing in extreme bass.
